Push-in wiring on electrical outlets (often called backstabbing) is dangerous because internal spring clips lose tension over time, leading to loose wire connections that generate extreme heat and create a serious fire hazard. What Is Push-In Outlet Wiring?
When an electrician or DIYer installs a wall receptacle, they have two common methods for attaching the circuit wires: wrapping the stripped wire around the side screws or pushing the bare wire directly into spring-loaded push-in holes on the back of the outlet.
While push-in terminals allow for faster installation during construction, they are about half as reliable as traditional screw terminals. Over time, simple physical vibrations, temperature fluctuations, and plugging devices in and out weaken the spring mechanism inside the outlet.
