6 Signs It’s Time for a New Heater

Whether you’ve been in your Claremont home for 20 years or just moved in recently,  you want your home to be a safe and warm environment through the unpredictable winter weather. While you might not always think about your furnace, you certainly do when you rely on it for the colder days.

There are ways to help prepare your home’s heating unit for the winter through a regular maintenance visit by our team of experts as well as some maintenance that you might be able to do as the homeowner.

Below is a list of 6 telltale signs that it’s time for a new furnace for your home to keep you both safe and comfortable. If you notice any of the items listed below, make sure to call our HVAC experts at Accurate Electric Plumbing Heating & Air.

  1. Strong Fuel Smell

A heating system that runs on fuel should not smell like fuel or like something is burning. When a furnace is suddenly producing odors, you will want to take quick action. A strong fuel smell means there is a leak that needs to be repaired- and it needs to be repaired right away.

  1. Slow to Start

Wiring problems are the most common cause for this issue and a sign of your furnace needing to be replaced. If the heater is difficult to start, it means it’s not functioning efficiently which can be a problem for your energy bill and the comfort of your home.

  1. Noisy Unit

If the heating unit is making consistently odd noises, such as rattles, buzzes or hums, it is time to have it checked by the professionals. These noises come from cracks, leaks or other structural issues with the furnace. Any noises outside of the normal hum could indicate there are failing parts that need to be repaired or replaced in the heater.

  1. Rust or Cracks

Cracks and rust naturally occur over time to furnaces. When the rust or cracks in or around your furnace are visible to the untrained eye, it’s a sign that it’s time to be replaced as it can cause the unit to start making odd noises, be less energy efficient, and ultimately unsafe in time.

  1. Uneven Room Heating

One of the first signs homeowners notice when they need repair for their heaters is a lack of heat. Some rooms may seem colder than others. Homeowners may notice lukewarm or even cold air coming from the vents instead of warm. As the furnace ages, it can struggle to push heat evenly throughout the entire home.

  1. Discolored Pilot Light

When a heater is working efficiently, the pilot light should be blue. One way to know something is not working as it should is if the pilot light on your furnace turns yellow. This indicates a serious ventilation issue that should not be ignored. Carbon monoxide could be leaking into the home. It is best to leave all heater repairs to the professionals.

If you have any of the 6 telltale signs above happening, it is time to replace the furnace you have right now.

Other reasons you might consider replacing your furnace include the age of your home’s furnace, continually rising energy bills due to the system working less efficiently, home humidity problems or excessive dust, dirt or soot.

Remember it is best to leave all heater repairs to the professionals and to contact our friendly team at Accurate Electric Plumbing & Heating to come check out your home and make the best recommendation on what to do next to ensure a safe and warm home.
