How to Reset Your Electrical System – No Tools Required

When an outlet or light stops working, customers often assume they need an electrician. While most electrical repairs and maintenance should be left to the professionals, there are a few things you can try first. No tools required!

Reset GFCI Outlet Near Source of Outage

First, check all of the GFCI’s in the home. These are the outlets with TEST/RESET buttons and are located near sources of water, outdoors, and in the garage. Simply resetting the outlet that is not working might resolve the issue.

Reset Tripped Breakers in Panel

If that doesn’t work, check if any breakers have tripped in the main panel. To reset a tripped breaker, simply flip it to the off position, then flip it back to the on position. All the breakers should line up evenly.

Reset Entire Panel/Electrical System

Finally, if those two steps don’t work you can try resetting your entire electrical system.

This is the process that our electrician recommends for resetting your panel to see if you can restore power back to that circuit. The only sure-fire way to assure that you have reset everything in your Rancho Cucamonga home is to reset the entire panel.

Follow these Steps

Warning: While at the breaker panel, locate the main breaker. These are often labeled “Main” or “Service Disconnect,” and are located at the top of the panel. It also will identify the amperage of the panel and will have the number identifying its capacity, such as 100, 150, or 200. Once you have located this breaker, DO NOT TOUCH IT for this process. This will do more harm than help.

  1. For the remainder of your breakers, go through and turn EACH ONE to the off position. Some may be easy to switch, while others require a bit more effort.
  2. Once every breaker is off, turn each breaker back to the on position, one by one. In many cases, power is now restored.
  3. The final step is to go throughout your property and reset your GFCI receptacles (these are the outlets with the TEST and RESET buttons in the middle). They are usually located on your outside outlets, in the garage, as well as in the kitchen, bath- rooms, and laundry room. Be sure to reset EACH ONE. We had a customer reset a GFCI outlet in his garage, and lights came back on in his upstairs bedroom.

Following each of these steps should restore power back to your outlet. This works 95% of the time. If this does not restore power back to your outlets, please give us a call at (626) 360-3111 and we will be sure to send our electrician out to take care of this for you.

How to Safely Use Extension Cords

‘Tis the season . . . In just a few weeks homes across the US will be celebrating Thanksgiving, a day of gratitude and the official sign that it is socially acceptable to put up your holiday decorations. Though no judgment from us if you have already started spreading the holiday joy through a little exterior illumination.

Whichever side of the holiday decor debate you fall on, you will most likely need to use extension cords to string up lights, inflate lawn decore, and trim your tree. To keep your home safe from injury and electrical fires, follow these simple tips.

Transcript:

Extension cords are a fantastic invention, but it’s important to use them safely. Each year thousands of injuries and fires are the direct result of improper extension cord usage. Here are some extension cord safety tips and information.

First, never use a cord that is damaged. Don’t use a cord that is hot. Extension cords can overheat if what you have plugged in draws more current than the extension cord can carry.

And overheated cords can start fires.

Second, never use an inside rated extension cord outside. Inside rated extension cords have thinner jackets than outside cords, which have more durable jackets. It’s safe to use an outdoor extension cord inside, but using an indoor extension cord outside can lead to overheating and dangerous short circuits.

Next, keep extension cords out of high traffic areas like doorways or walkways where they can pose a tripping hazard. If you need to put a cord in a high traffic area, make it a temporary solution. This is particularly important if you ever have children or older people in your home.

If you use an extension cord on a regular basis, chances are you have too few outlets in your home. If you would like to add more outlets or prepare broken outlets, give us a call at (626) 360-3111. We would be happy to help you out.

How to Find the Most Efficient Furnace

Is your heating system fit to keep you warm throughout the winter season? If your current furnace is more than 15 years old, it might be time to begin thinking about replacing it with a newer more efficient unit.

While the thought of shopping for a furnace may seem daunting, especially if you are not familiar with current heating system standards, here is a simple way you can determine if a furnace is a good fit for your home and your budget.

If you’re interested in having one of our home comfort specialists come out and inspect your current system or provide you with a professional recommendation, give us a call.

Transcript:

Homeowners looking to save money can look to their furnace for energy savings. The key is knowing how to shop for a furnace. Here’s what you need to know.

Every furnace has an efficiency rating called an AFUE. Which stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. This efficiency is a guide from you to know how much it will cost to heat your home. Have a look at this chart. When you increase the AFUE rating the furnace becomes more efficient. You can see over time that the savings really add up. The cost of replacing an old inefficient furnace is returned in lower utility bills. And that is money back in your pocket.

When shopping for a new furnace you can compare AFUE ratings. That’s because the rating of 95 on one brand is the same as the rating of 95 on another brand.

If you would like more information about AFEU ratings and which rating is right for you, give us a call. We will be happy to help you out.

5 Benefits of a Heating System Check-up

Before the invention of central heating, most homes had a fireplace to keep them warm through the cold winter nights. You may have one in your home, though you probably don’t use it often. Most SoCal residents have fireplaces for aesthetic reasons instead of necessity.  But just like a fireplace needed annual cleaning and maintenance to ensure proper function and safety, your home’s heating system needs an annual check-up too.

Have you had your heating system checked yet? This video outlines the most important reasons to schedule this essential home maintenance appointment.

For more information on what an Accurate heating system check includes, check out our heating system check-up page.  And be sure to take advantage of our November special and get your Heating System Checked for only $79 (Regularly $180).  Schedule your appointment today!

Which Furnace Filter is Right for You?

Something as simple as changing your furnace filter can make a world of difference when it comes to the air quality in your home. But how do you know which furnace filter is best for your furnace or your home? Watch this quick video to learn about the different types of filters.

Video Transcript

When it comes to home maintenance projects, nothing could be easier than changing your furnace filter. How do you know which one to buy? I’m Miriam Johnson, co-host of the tv series Hometime. Changing your furnace filter on a regular basis can help improve the air quality of your home. It can extend the life of your furnace and air conditioning system, and it can save you energy dollars. How do you know which one is right for you? Let’s take a look at three common types.

First, we have a disposable fiberglass filter. These have been around for years and they’re fairly inexpensive. Now the problem is these do little more than prevent the large particles like dust and lint from damaging your furnace. Smaller particles like mold and pollen will fly right through and back into your house. This is a disposable pleated filter made from cotton or polyester. These are pretty good at removing smaller particles. But they need to be changed more frequently because they’re so dense they fill up fast. This one is a 24 volt polarized media air cleaner. I like this one because when particles pass through they get electronically charged and they stick to the filter. Even the smallest particles including pollen, pet dander, flu viruses, and airborne germs get trapped. This filter turns your furnace and air conditioning system into a whole-house air cleaning system. Pretty cool! There’s also contractor grade filters that are available through your heating and cooling service company that’ll do a great job. Selecting the right filter depends on your furnace and your needs. If you’d like more information on the right filter for your home, give us a call. We’ll be happy to help you out!

Safety Tips for Outlets & Switches

If you’re tripping your circuit breaker when you turn on a light, or if your charger plugs are falling out of your outlets then these could be signs that your switches or outlets are worn out and need replacing. Don’t ignore these signs, they could mean that your home needs more serious, professional electrical attention!

Video Transcript

Have you ever thought about how many times you turn on a light switch or plug something into an outlet well over the course of 20 years that could be thousands of times. Hi, I’m Miriam Johnson, co-host of tv series Hometime. Switches and outlets wear out with daily use. When they wear out they can become dangerous. Here are a few things you can do to make sure your outlets and switches are safe to use.

If a switch doesn’t work or it trips a breaker, it’s time to replace the switch. If it’s really loose or it sticks when you use it, that could be a sign that something is broken inside the switch. When the plug slides right out of the outlet that means the outlet has become too weak to hold the plug. When that happens it’s time to replace the outlet. Now that’s because there’s a loose connection between the plug and the outlet. Space creates an arc of electricity that can jump between the plug and the outlet, and that can create a fire hazard. If electrical outlets or switch plate covers are discolored, this is a sign that the connections behind the faceplates are overheating. And believe it or not, I’ve seen switches and outlets that smoke when they’re used, which is a pretty dangerous situation that needs to be addressed immediately by a qualified electrician. If you’d like more information about outlets and switches in your home, give us a call. We’ll be happy to help you out!

Benefits of Home Plumbing Checks

Plumbing checks give professional plumbers the opportunity to find potential problems in your plumbing systems before they become disasters. This not only keeps you and your family safe but can also save you money in the future!

Video Transcript

An annual plumbing check is a great way to keep plumbing repair costs to a minimum by catching small problems before they become big expensive disasters. Hi, I’m Miriam Johnson, co-host of the tv series Hometime. A home’s plumbing system can wreak havoc if it fails.

Normally most plumbing problems don’t happen all at once. They start small and slowly grow over time. Catching problems early is precisely why the check is so important. So what is a plumbing check, let’s review some of the things it includes.

First, they’ll check the overall condition of your water and drain system. Experts know where to look and what to look for. They’ll also look at your water heater to make sure there are no leaks, check the water pressure, and inspect the venting system to make sure it’s properly attached and in good working order. Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of combustion and a faulty vent could introduce these dangerous gasses into your family’s living space. Plumbing checks also include faucets and sinks, toilets, garbage disposals, septic systems, and more. A big part of the check is what you can’t see. Using video technology, experts can look into your sewer pipe, deep underground, making sure there’s no root infiltration that could lead to deteriorating, collapsed, or blocked sewer lines. One common cause of blocked sewer lines is tree roots. They slow and eventually stop the flow of water in the drain, which could cause it to back up into your home. For the peace of mind, a plumbing check could provide, give us a call. We’ll be happy to help you out.

Where & How to Use LED Lightbulbs

LED lighting can be used anywhere and everywhere throughout your house. We take you on a tour of the best uses and benefits of LED lighting around your home.

Video Transcript

This is an LED light bulb, and so is this. And so are all of these, they can be used throughout your home. Hi, I’m Miriam Johnson, co-host of the tv series Hometime. LED stands for light emitting diode. Good quality LED light bulbs last longer, are incredibly energy efficient and offer comparable or better light quality than other lighting options. Lighting colors range from warm, soft white, to cool bright white, and even daylight. So, where can you use an LED light? Pretty much in every room.

In the living room, general or ambient lighting provides a uniform amount of light, and now most LEDs are dimmable so you can set a mood. Recessed LED lights can be used all over the house. They’re very popular in hallways, bathrooms, and kitchens. LEDs work well outdoors too. They’re used in landscape lighting, wall lighting, and security lighting. Decorative LED lighting is like jewelry for your home. The main function of this fixture is to enhance the look of a particular room or area. Kitchen under cabinet lighting is one of the most popular uses for LED lighting. They’re small, directional, and ideal for lighting up the countertop for reading recipes and cooking. They also add warmth by lighting up dark spaces. If you’d like to discuss LED lighting for your home, give us a call. We’ll be happy to help you out!
