Heatwave Survival Tips

Heatwave Survival Tips | Accurate Electric, Plumbing, Heating and Air

Keeping cool in the hot summer months is a goal everyone wants to achieve. Between cool drinks, air conditioners, fans, and pools, we’re all looking for ways to avoid the heat. Even though no one likes being hot in general, one thing to be extra careful of is heatwaves. Heatwaves are periods of excessively hot weather that can be dangerous if we’re not careful. They can lead to rolling blackouts and raise the likelihood of wildfires. They can also be dangerous to our health by causing heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heat-stroke.

So, what can you do to stay cool when a heatwave hits?

  1. Stay Hydrated – This might seem like an obvious one, but sometimes we can forget how important it is to stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of cool water can help you avoid symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
  2. Close the Blinds/Curtains – Draw the blinds and curtains to prevent warmth from coming in. If you have rooms in the house that tend to get warmer than others, close the doors and stay in the cooler rooms.
  3. Wear Thin, Loose Clothing – Wearing lightweight clothing, like cotton or linen shirts, dresses, and shorts can help keep your body cooler than heavier or form-fitting clothing by increasing breathability.
  4. Create Your own “Swamp Cooler” – As mentioned, heatwaves can lead to rolling blackouts, cutting off our access to an A/C or Fans. For this one, all you need is a 5-gallon bucket, a battery-powered fan, and some ice water. Here’s a quick DIY to building your own at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHbQYajfGqM
  5. Dampen Your Curtains/Hang Wet Sheets – Hanging wet curtains or sheets near windows allows the breeze passing through them to cool down more through the evaporation of the water.
  6. Go Swimming – If you have a friend with a pool or live close to a community pool, head over with a cooler and some snacks and make a day of it. Just don’t forget your SPF!
  7. Head to the Movies – If you don’t have A/C at home, seek out Air-conditioned public spaces like a grocery store or the movie theater.
  8. Have an Emergency Kit – In the instance that the power does go out during a heatwave, it’s best to be prepared. Having an emergency kit with water, batteries, a flashlight, sanitation products, snacks, medicine, etc – can save you from a lot of hassles during an emergency.

We hope these tips help you feel more prepared for when a heatwave strikes. Stay cool out there!

The Heat is On and Freon is Gone

Freon is a chlorofluorocarbon – a 6-syllable colorless gas you don’t care about, but that could become your next problem.  Developed in 1930 by General Motors and Dupont, Freon is as also known R-22 and has been utilized for decades in refrigeration, air conditioning units, and freezers.   Because of its toxicity and its contribution to depleting the ozone layer, Freon will cease to be manufactured starting in January 2020. If you live in Southern California and your AC system is 10-15 years or older, investing in a solution now will save you from sweating out a heatwave later.

Your air conditioner uses a system of coils and compressors, which heats Freon to make it very hot.  When it travels through the coils, this chlorofluorocarbon gas cools down into a liquid form, absorbing heat from the outside air, and pushing out cold air.  This cyclical operation is the exact reason why living in the San Fernando Valley isn’t so bad if you don’t own a swimming pool.

Freon hasn’t been imported into the United States since 2010. The Environmental Protection Agency developed a phase-out procedure so homeowners and businesses could have time to develop a plan to change systems.  Some HVAC companies predict the price for Freon to raise over $200 per pound. R410A was developed as a substitute refrigerant to be more environmentally friendly, but you can’t use it in systems that run on Freon.

You probably won’t see people fighting in Home Depot parking lots or sleeping outside of Walmart for Black Friday Deals on Freon, because instead of stockpiling more Freon, you should start planning alternatives for your home. Alternatives that are a permanent fix instead of a way to kick the can down the road only to deal with it another day. There’s no back-alley market selling Freon out of trucks or any guys in dark coats with sunglasses that know people who know other people.  While investing in a new air conditioning system may seem costly, finding your own answer to the extinction of Freon now will give you a lot more relief in the future.

Jeff Seale of Accurate Electrical, Plumbing Heating and Air knows the clock is ticking for his customers. “We want our customers to have all the right information so they can make the best choice that suits their needs.  Our goal is always to provide options so homeowners don’t feel cornered into one solution, but Freon is going away forever. So if we all don’t proactively take action, none of us may have the best options when the well dries up for good.”

Technician retrofitting old A/C unit to run on more sustainable refrigerant.

Some air conditioning systems are flexible enough to be retrofitted.  This means a technician can come out to your home and mechanically alter your system so that it will run on a more sustainable refrigerant.  This short-cut the pricey replacement cost of a new system, but retrofitting can only go so far depending on the size of your home and the uniqueness of your property.  While your unit may use an alternate blended refrigerant capable of replacing Freon and helping the environment for the greater good, the operation of your system will change and most likely underachieve.  Imagine trying to run a 1970 Chevy Chevelle with a 121-horsepower setup. That’s like driving around with a Prius engine. Maybe you’re not a car person, but what happens when you don’t update your iPhone operating system after prompting you to multiple times? You notice a difference.

It was actually at the University of California in 1973 where this all started to come about.  A radiochemistry researcher named F. Sherwood Roland and partner Mario Molina had constructed a model showing that chlorofluorocarbons didn’t dissipate the way everyone thought they did.  Their model showed how these chlorofluorocarbons reached the stratosphere before they decomposed and freed chlorine, which destroys the ozone. It has taken this long to completely rid our environment of just releasing this chemical, so you can imagine the damage already done.

Now in Southern California, there is a swift culture change to enhance our lifestyles by living ‘greener’ and an infatuation of utilizing new technology within our daily lives.  There are many commercial and residential air conditioning systems that do not use harmful chemicals and also save you a lot of money on your power bills because of their efficient design and operating capabilities.   With Southern California being a highly desired home location to so many people either looking to buy property or rent, upgrading your HVAC system is an investment that may seem costly but that will actually increase your property’s value substantially in the long run.

Experts in the industry like Accurate have been servicing Southern California homes for decades and know the kind of heat Southern California brings on during the summers.  The Freon phase-out may present itself to any homeowner budgeting their year as an aggravating complication, but it is really an opportunity in disguise.

An upgrade for a higher-performing HVAC system could be the first step into creating a smart home or might be the frosting you need to sell your property at a value that will put dollar signs in your eyes.  The age of Freon is gone, but the heat in Southern California is always on, so a plan of action is the first step in the right direction.

To learn more about the Freon phase-out and get options from a licensed technician that will fit your home needs, contact us today.

Why Customers Always Come First

Jeff with his wife LeAnne and their four sons.

When Jeff Seale had been working as an electrician in the 1990s he noticed a dysfunctional industry in Southern California.  There was a disconnection between homeowners and electrical contractors. Repairs and service calls seemed less than complete when homeowners would often be left with unanswered questions or in doubt about the work completed inside their own house. Electrical contractors and technicians would make repairs, rewire systems, and more but there was little to no communication and a lack of customer service effort.

Jeff became an electrician in 1989.  He’s also been a family man for over 25 years.  As a professional electrician, a father, and a husband, he valued the idea of serving families like his own.  His emphasis in the home services industry was to extend quality work beyond the toolbox and the 9-5 business hours to provide exceptional customer service. Jeff wanted families to know exactly what they were getting and every detail of the kind of work being performed inside their homes.

Like so many repairs he had made in the field, Jeff sought to rewire the entire customer service system for electricians, as well as plumbers and HVAC technicians.  This was the inspiration for creating Accurate Electric, Plumbing, Heating & Air. Since 2005, Jeff has been growing his team of professionals with a family-oriented culture and a small business mindset.  Jeff’s message to you, as his customer and Southern California neighbor, is when you choose Accurate you get dependability, honesty and exceptional customer service.

Accurate sets itself apart from other home service companies because their work is influenced by the community and family.  Accurate values people and their safety so when there’s an issue, we don’t treat jobs or service calls like a standard number or just another file.  Accurate focuses on each case respecting the uniqueness that no home is the same as another. Just like the family culture at Accurate, our technicians believe they have an obligation to make homeowners feel safe and inform them.

Customers Always Come First

We love our customers!

Open and honest communication with customers is the epicenter of what Jeff Seale wanted to provide.  When you invite a technician into your home they should feel as if they are a guest. Our technicians respect the privacy of homeowners and go out of their way to give customers all their options for repairs or issues.  A simple fact about electric, plumbing, and HVAC work is that there are a lot of homeowners that were never trained how to perform the work or know a lot about it. It can seem overwhelming when service companies don’t give you any options and corner you into one solution.  Accurate will take the time to explain the issue and will help you find the best solution that fits your budget and will benefit your home while keeping your family safe.

Accurate continues to carry Jeff’s vision through all the work our professionals perform throughout Southern California.  We know this land and we know what elements can affect your home. We probably live in the same neighborhood you do and that’s why it’s important to us that we give you the kind of service you would get from a good neighbor.  We believe in Jeff’s vision and we value you.

GIVE THE GIFT OF HOME IMPROVEMENT

Give the Gift of Home Improvement

In search of holiday gift ideas? Look no further. If a loved-one, family member or friend is not the easiest person to shop for, Accurate has the answer. This holiday season (until Dec. 20) Accurate is offering 15% off all gift cards of $100 or more. If you have a loved one or partner that has been wanting to start, finish or continue with a remodeling or home improvement project, this is the ultimate stocking stuffer. For some Christmas and holiday shoppers, the gift has to be special. Some might say that gift cards lack creativity, but with everything you can purchase using an Accurate gift card, it’s just the opposite. Here are a few reasons why giving the gift of Home Improvement might just be the best gift you ever give.

JUMPSTART THE DREAM

As the old saying goes, ‘the home is where the heart is’, and the heart is always entitled to dream a little bigger. Sometimes people talk about making changes or starting big remodeling projects but life, work, kids, school, and other obligations always seem a little overwhelming on the budget to even consider starting a project. Giving a holiday gift of home improvement can motivate them to begin with relief on their finances. Help them realize their vision by inspiring them to make it all possible. Show them a new kitchen with new lighting that isn’t that far away.

REPAIRS

The best part about this holiday gift is that you don’t need to use it for new projects. You can end the same old complaining you keep hearing every time you visit your cousin, friend, or other relatives. They keep telling you they’re going to get that fixture fixed but it never happens. You can’t use the backroom bathroom at your cousin’s because the toilet doesn’t flush right and they’ve been meaning to have it looked at. With this gift idea, you can help whomever you like with whatever necessary repair needs to be made. Sure it’s not a shiny television wrapped in a gold paper they can open in front of everyone, but your gift will mean more in the long run than you or they could probably imagine. Get ready to become the family MVP for the year with this gift.

BUDGET

Expensive projects and remodeling plans can pinch a wallet pretty tight. With a holiday gift of home improvement, you can really help your relative or friend out by relieving some of the stress related to the project cost. Many times a new project, costly repairs, or appliance replacement can be something people hold off on because they don’t necessarily always have a slush fund for homework set aside. When you give the gift of Accurate you are making home desires more affordable and somebody’s dream a little bit more realistic. You could also be relieving the pressure that someone feels when they think about a home repair job that is needed but continuously put off. You could always purchase a material sample along with your gift. Don’t worry if it’s not the right marble or tone of color if anything this will inspire them, even more, to take your gift and make their home improvements a reality. When costs of living are rising in Los Angeles County and Orange County every year, the Accurate gift card is the best way to help your loved ones get closer to planning, beginning, or even finishing that project.

YOUR GIFT WILL OUTLAST YOU

It’s true. Not to over-exaggerate here, but with this holiday gift idea you could end up sparking a new project that eventually may become the kitchen where your grandchildren cook for their kids. You could end up initiating the beginning of a beautifully lit backyard oasis that entertains parties for decades to come. That’s a Christmas gift idea that would probably put you in the book of legends. Home is where families grow up. Your home environment is how you remember your childhood and is supposed to be your favorite place in the world. Giving the gift of making someone’s home better and closer to their dream home is better than any other Christmas or Holiday gift one could imagine. Even if you’re not paying for the whole lot, you’re helping a loved one construct something that’s important to them and that’s a gift goes way beyond all expectation. Happy Holidays from Accurate!

Still not convinced? Home improvement makes the perfect gift, and not just for the holidays- be it a birthday, wedding anniversary, or just to say thanks to someone you care about. Click here for more reasons an Accurate gift card is the best gift all year round!

Top Issues Affecting Your San Dimas Home

“City

Set on the east edge of the San Gabriel Valley with its small-town feel, San Dimas is probably one of the most peaceful and quiet neighborhoods of Los Angeles. If you’re living in this once-upon-a-time Sunkist town you know it’s a comfortable place to hang your hat and rest your head. With its historical features, Raging Waters park, and being at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, San Dimas is the native land of the dog-walker and happy homeowner.

With the homeownership rate being higher than the national average, there’s a 72% chance you probably make up part of the San Dimas population that owns a home. If you’re part of that pie you know how much work it can be to keep your home running efficiently especially if you’re not the only person living there. As property value continues to increase in San Dimas maintaining the longevity of your home is vital to its market value as well as your own well-being.

Maintaining your home isn’t always simple but if you know the main issues affecting your San Dimas Home, it can be easier to pinpoint what you need to do in order to avoid the expensive unexpected.

ELECTRICAL

If your home was built before 1990 you probably want to consider the age of your electrical wiring. Sometimes there are signals that can raise awareness that it may be time to at least have an assessment to see what kind of condition your electrical system is in.

“Electrical

When was the last time you had your wiring checked?

If you notice your circuit breakers tripping on a regular or semi-regular basis you might want to ask yourself why this is happening. Breakers trip as safety prevention to stop electricity when a circuit can’t handle it. If a breaker trips out you shouldn’t, because it’s saving you from potential fire risk.

Depending on how old your electrical system is and when your house was built you could need a panel replacement or a safety upgrade. The chances are that twenty to thirty years ago there wasn’t a television in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or even your garage. A lot of San Dimas residents are using more electronics today than the house was built to handle. That’s obvious even to Grandma. But what’s not obvious is that it’s probably putting more stress on your electrical system, which warrants the possibility of some updated wiring.

PLUMBING

After 25 years of flushing, it’s hard to believe your pipes would be in mint condition. Do you know your home’s plumbing history? If you’ve experienced some close calls or slow draining it might be time to call in a professional who can assess and solve issues quickly, saving you from much bigger problems down the line. While these signs could be telling of a small clog, they could also be a warning that your pipes are galvanizing or rusting away.

“Leaky

Leaks can sneak up on you because they escalate quickly, often before you know it. If you see dark spots in the wall or areas with added moisture there could be something happening beneath the surface. It’s true that plumbing systems can be one of the most neglected systems by a homeowner simply because most issues are hidden from plain view. A slow-draining bathtub can annoying but you can adapt. You end up living on a daily basis knowing that your bathtub drains slowly without checking to see if there is a more complex issue causing it. Not to mention the hustle and bustle of our lives that tend to take our attention from little things like that. Unfortunately, it’s those little things that can end up turning into a gigantic emergency. Pipe-replacements should be considered in your San Dimas home if it was built more than 25 years ago.

AIR CONTROL

The San Dimas weather is beautiful most of the year with a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. With the hot air on the eastside of Los Angeles, it can be easy to want to run your air-conditioner all day long, especially in the peak summer months. Yet depending on the size of your San Dimas home, there’s always an alternative to running up your energy bill or blowing out your air-conditioner.

Ceiling fans are a smart way to manage air temperature in your house so you don’t have to burn electricity all the time. If you are missing out on that Westside breeze another alternative option is a QuietCool system that can save you a lot of money during the summer as well as provide healthier air within your home. Get more info about QuietCool whole house fans.

Your home is like an ecosystem in the sense that one variable affects how the function of the other but together they are harmonious. If you run your A/C like a racecar you’ll find out how durable your electrical system is. If your electrical wiring is loose or faulty wiring gets wet from a pipe leak you’ll want to know who to call and what to do. We’re not suggesting that your home could potentially turn into a Super Mario Brothers game with pitfalls and fireballs, but to avoid any kind of expensive emergency, Accurate can get a deeper look at the cause and fix it before you have to fight Bowser.
